Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember the first time you flew a kite? The feeling of freedom and fun that accompanied it was surely priceless. I will be empowering my students through art by providing the opportunity to build kites, as well as decorate them thematically as a culminating task for our unit on The Kite Runner.
I work at a low income, Title I school at which most of our students qualify for free lunch.
Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school. Many of my students are college-bound, highly motivated, hard working and dream of success.
My Project
I would like these Frustrationless Flyer kite kits so that my students can make connections between what they are reading and real life. Many of my students have never flown a kite, and have only read about it. After reading The Kite Runner in our World Literature class, students will be able to understand the important and central idea of kites in the book through building and flying their own kites. They will also draw on and decorate the kites with themes and ideas from the novel which will strengthen the connections they make between their lives, the novel, the kite flying experience, and the arts. Art and music budgets have been cut drastically over the past few years, and students need and deserve more opportunities to be creative and artistic. I think this will be a great opportunity for my students to make cross-curricular connections, and will allow many of my students to feel empowered through the arts.
Empowering students through art is so important and this is the perfect opportunity.
This project will improve my classroom and student learning opportunities because they will be able to not only build and fly a kite (for many of them, for the first time) but also to make connections between literature, their own lives, and even what they've learned in art class.
