My Students

I will be teaching 8-13 students in a special education classroom who have varying special needs such as autism, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities as well as adaptive and social-emotional needs. The students are from diverse backgrounds from low-income neighborhoods.

For my students, literacy materials are not just helpful, but provide access to the world around them from now into the future!

In fact, developing literacy is an important essential aspect of fighting oppression! Becoming literate opens up a whole new world for these special education students! In addition, because of special needs, a variety of literacy support materials are necessary to help these students develop and maintain literacy skills.

Help my students open the gate to the world now and in their future and rise above one more aspect of oppression in the world!

My Project

I will be teaching K-2 special education students in a low income school district with little funding for curriculum support materials. Given the importance of literacy for all of life going forward, it is essential to have multiple ways to engage students in learning literacy, especially for special education students with autism, dyslexia, and learning disabilities. Students who do not become literate are at a great disadvantage going forward. By funding this project, you will be partnering in teaching my special education students essential literacy in ways that engage the students and make sense to them. While a solid curriculum forms the foundation for literacy, much practice is needed for students to store what they learn in their working memory. These support materials will help put these literacy skills into their working memory allowing them access to the world around them from now into the future!
