"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts."- Rachel Carson
Most of my students have never had the opportunity to commune with nature in a meaningful way.
This overnight field trip would give them the chance to explore our Earth firsthand.
Our elementary school is surrounded by history in Philadelphia, yet many of our students have never been outside of Philadelphia.
My students are from diverse cultures and backgrounds and from a variety of socio-economic statuses. Our school is truly a melting pot. The sixth grade is a group of students who work hard, challenge each other, and are eager to try new things. They have been lucky to visit the many sites of Philadelphia, but are eager to head out of the city and into the wilderness!
My Project
This project will help students experience life out of the city. Attending The Outdoor School in Horsham will allow us to study the stars, watch the moon, work on a farm, learn about animals, go bird watching, and build an even stronger group of students. We study environments, organisms and landforms in sixth grade, and this opportunity to have an overnight camping experience will allow us to practice the different skills we have learned.
This experience will allow students to see how much they can do on their own and allow them to become more independent.
I believe this trip will challenge all students on different levels to become prepared for life.
