My Students
How could anyone dislike coming to work when you interact with students who work hard everyday to achieve their potential? As a speech-language pathologist servicing 6th-8th grade students with various disabilities, including Down's syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, I have seen first hand the lengths my students will go to make us educators proud every day. They are vital members of our community who make coming to work every day a joy.
As educators, we have implement various teaching techniques in order to enhance each students' unique learning experience.
We focus our teaching points on both academic and vocational skills by providing various related services and small classroom size instruction. The students on my case load have various communication abilities. Some cannot communicate verbally; however, they find their own unique ways to communicate. They use gestures, picture symbols, and various devices from low-tech to high tech.
My Project
Everyone deserves a voice to express themselves. It can be difficulty to know when a student is ready to make the leap from a low-tech device to a more dynamic display device. The process requires extensive assessment and carry over. By having an iPad with the appropriate software, I can prepare my students for the transition between low tech and higher tech devices. Together, my students and I will be afforded the opportunity to explore various programs until we find the right program that best addresses their needs. We can then go forth in the process of obtaining their own device. The iPad can also be used to teach other skills from reading and comprehension programs, to following direction games which my students enjoy. When a student finds joy in what they are learning, they always try harder and we see more generalized progress!
