This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a Title I priority school. This means that there is very little funding; yet, we have a high need for materials to support instruction. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. These challenges do not stop them from participating in class with a bright smile and an eagerness to learn something new.

I love how curious my students are about the world around them and how much they love school and learning!

My students are a diverse group of learners that bring a variety of cultures into the classroom. They all bring a unique personality and a strong desire for learning. In our class, we focus on a growth mindset, fostering positive relationships with our peers, and choosing kindness above everything else. This year brought upon some of the most difficult challenges yet, but my students showed perseverance and remarkable achievement through the school year. Their eagerness to learn is what keeps me motivated.

My Project

Many children with disabilities have strong visual skills, and visual supports can help take advantage of those strengths. Visual communication tools such as objects, photographs, picture symbols, daily schedules, and choice boards can provide the support necessary to greatly improve a child’s ability to communicate, helping children be more active, independent, and successful participants in their lives.

Through visual supports, students can learn to communicate with others and make sense of the world around them when in the school setting.

We will use these classroom basics like card-stock, printer ink, laminating sheets and Velcro for creating the visual supports needed to make successful learners!
