My Students

Our school is a unique urban education center that has a special flavor and appeal in that it is an academic and art center. Students here are a mix of 9th-12th graders who are very talented in the arts. Their artistic talents range from music and dance to creative writing and theater technology. However, most come from very impoverished backgrounds; in fact, our school provides a 100% free school breakfast and lunch. As a result of poverty, these students often have limited educational resources and experiences with nature and the world outside of our city.

My Project

Incorporating STEM learning in the classroom can be extremely powerful for students especially when it relates to real-world problems and situations. The Next Generation Science Standards encourage and allow for more room to implement engineering and technology in everything we do in the classroom. The limiting factor for providing this type of education becomes the students' access to technology and technology-enhanced experiences. My goal is to provide an opportunity for my students to be able to regularly build virtual models of molecular structures and systems in biology. These models can then be transferred and viewed in the virtual world using merge cubes and tablets. The models students create would be viewed and studied in the 3-D virtual world using the Object Viewer App. I believe that providing students with this opportunity will greatly enhance their understanding of the life they are studying.

The donations to this project will allow students to interact with molecular structures and biological systems three-dimensionally in a virtual world.

Using this type of technology will enhance their understanding as well as teach them skills and creative ways of solving problems. I am convinced that the better equipped our students are for their life outside of school, the more successful they can be and the more they can contribute to the world around them. I believe that this project will provide that opportunity.
