I teach at a school where 95% of my children receive free or reduced lunch. Each year classroom teachers get a set amount of money to get supplies for their classroom. As the new media specialist I do not get money for basic supplies.
I went from teaching 24 kids a week to teaching 450 kids a week.
I am lucky enough to teach all of the grades from first grade to fifth grade. I love my new position. However, it does mean that teaching this many students means that we wear out our school supplies even quicker.
My Project
My students are in real need of pencil sharpeners for our classroom as well as colored pencils and crayons. We keep two pencil sharpener at the back of the media center. This way the students are able to sharpen their pencils as needed. Both of our pencil sharpeners stopped working last week. With only two hand held pencil sharpeners we are down to sharpening our pencils once a week. We will use our pencil sharpeners as soon as we get them. At the moment we are using hand held pencil sharpeners to sharpen our pencils.
We also do many projects to go along with the books that we read in the media center.
We use our crayons and colored pencils to do their projects. When we get back from spring break my older students are going to work on creating their own comic strips. Students will create a story board of their comic strip. They will need crayons and colored pencils to color their illustrations. They will take their comic strips and create an online comic strip based on their story board. The older students prefer using the colored pencils so we are constantly having to sharpen them. Our younger students are going to take a character from a story and draw their character using the colored pencils and crayons. They will use Chatterpix to make their character talk.
By purchasing our classroom pencil sharpeners, crayons and colored pencils you will be helping us tremendously. It is not feasible to purchase our pencil sharpeners and other supplies for our class with no supply money so you would be doing us a much needed service. We have 430 students who come to the media center over the course of a week so these school supplies get a lot of use.
