My Students
I have a group of thirteen amazing three-year-old PreK students. We are located in a small rural district in northeastern Oklahoma. The majority of the schools in our district are Title I. Our community has a very high Native American population, as it is the home for nine Tribal Nations. Many of my students are experiencing being in a school setting for the first time. We are preparing them and building a foundation for them to continue to become successful scholars.
My Project
My kids love to draw and paint. However, we do not have a dedicated place to do art. I am asking for an art easel so we will always have a center for art work.
For children, art engages all the senses and helps develop their little brains.
So when we are three, doing art is vital to our brain development. With an art easel we will be manipulating different colors and shape, along with strengthening their fine motor skills. Standing and painting works on shoulder and elbow stability. It also strengthens their core and works to improve their posture. However; the most important, in my opinion, is it encourages the kids to cross their arms across their body, which makes them cross their midline.
When students cross the midline it is helping build up their brain. Our brains have two sides that carry out different functions. It is important for each side of the brain to communicate, and crossing the midline helps wire the two sides to better communicate with each other.
