High school students LOVE their coffee and tea. Those that drive themselves stop by coffee and tea shops on the way to school to get their favorite caffeine fix almost every day. They carry their coffee and tea around the building from class to class discussing what they like or dislike about certain types of drinks. A group of students asked the question, would it be possible to open a student-run coffee shop at the high school?
The students, together with future users and future partners, used the design thinking process to come up with a plan for a student-run coffee shop.
My Project
The students created a presentation and pitched the idea to school officials, local business owners and charitable foundations. They contacted local architects, plumbers, electricians, and contractors to formulate a design. They held school-wide naming and logo contests. They contacted vendors, baristas and roasters to learn what equipment would be needed. They collaborated with business teachers and accountants to create a budget. They worked with nutrition services to create recipes and learn about food safety standards. School Grounds is what came of all of this.
School Grounds is a school-sponsored, student-run, self-sustaining coffee shop business designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain employability skills while building their resumes.
The students wrote grants and received funding for School Grounds. Together with school and community partners, they built School Grounds. They recruited and trained student volunteers to run School Grounds. They began to offer samples to students and staff. During this time, it became abundantly clear that students and staff had a strong preference for iced drinks and the ice maker that was part of the original budget could not keep up. The students are in need of a commercial ice maker. They ran predictions to determine how much ice will be needed each day based on the information gathered during the sampling. They picked out a stainless steel VEVOR 110v Commercial Ice Maker with good reviews. This ice maker creates the needed 120-130 lbs of ice in a 24 hour span with a 33lbs storage bin.
Please help the students to get this last piece of equipment so that they can successfully operate their student-run coffee shop.
