This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

These math manipulatives like place value charts, fraction tiles, counters, and Teacher Pay Teachers resources will help bring math to life for my students. All students learn best when they are first introduced to a new mathematical concept through concrete resources.

The students in my classroom, many of whom come from Pacific nations such as the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Samoa and the Philippines have an especially experiential style of learning.

Education in these places doesn't take place in a traditional classroom setting. Most didn't grow up sitting at a desk and learning from a teacher. Instead, they learned real-life tasks by doing them, taught by relatives, elders and other community members.

To be engaging, our math lessons must be hands on and relevant. Allowing students to explore abstract concepts through the use of manipulatives is tough given our limited resources but time and again, these are the lessons that ensure deeper understanding and lasting learning.
