Let's Get Started with Online Literature Circles!

My students need 9 novels in sets of 4 including "The Red Pyramid" and "Book Thief" to read in literature circles. They discussed these titles with their own circle members and voted on them in each class.

My Students

While using technology certainly appeals to students, good old-fashioned books and the enjoyment of quality literature are at the hallmark of much of what we do. Our online literature circles combine the love of books with the use of technology. With over 150 students, we need lots of good books.

My 8th graders, all 155 of them, are happy, active kids who are enthusiastic about many things, including reading.

Once a week, they look forward to free reading time, a time when where they can stretch out on carpet squares or relax and get lost in a good book. They are voracious readers, many of them completing more than a book per week. My students are a smart group, but at thirteen, there are many cultures, places and things they've yet to experience. I remember reading The Good Earth in middle school and being amazed to know people had actually lived so close to the land. I learned that a good book is a window to the world, and I want the same experience for my students.

My Project

My students need more copies of books so they can join the book group of their choice with any of the 320 eighth graders at our school. To be able to read and discuss a book with their friends and peers is not only a fun way for them to learn but also exciting for me, as their teacher, to watch as they navigate through discussions using the life skills of resourcefulness, respect and responsibility. A favorite quote in our classroom is “You are the same today as you will be five years from now, except for the people you meet and the books you.” Mac McMillan The requested books are those my students like to read; adventure, fantasy or action stories with strong characters and plots that keep you on the edge of your seat. Many of these are also series books. My students and I both appreciate this type of book because good books often end leaving readers wanting more, and series books keep the characters and the plot alive.

I want my students to be continually amazed by good literature.

It is so wonderful to watch them read. Often, I can see the transformation, as they journey to other places in their minds. I want a classroom library brimming with good books, old favorites and new, for kids to select as they form initial book groups and return and through out the year.
