My Students

Do you remember the smell of wet paint and doing art projects in the classroom? Standardized testing has been the focus in our schools for the past few years and has pushed art in the back burner. I would like to start a standard based art program in my classroom called "Get Smart Through Art".

I work in a second grade classroom with a high number of EL students.

Our school is a Title I school where most of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students are currently performing below grade level in language arts and math state tests and they are struggling with the English language. Our school has been focusing on increasing test scores and art-based instruction is not a priority. The focus on test scores is so overwhelming that children come into my classroom not being able to create a work of art on their own, for fear of doing it wrong. They request models of what it should look like. It is essential to teach students the importance of taking pride in their work, the freedom to create, and the skills needed for organization. We need to bring the educational arts back in school to encourage children to learn about famous artists, learn about their art work, history, and use their creativity to produce an art project to share with friends and the community.

My Project

My project "Get Smart Through Art" will be a year-long project that will incorporate art history and technology. My goal is to introduce 10 artists, their famous art work, art history, and art techniques that made these artists famous. Each month children will be introduced to an artist through literature books. I will use the LCD projector to display art slide show presentations and watch DVDs on art technique using the school "Arts Attack" program. Video clips from this program will be downloaded on our existing iPads and children can view slide shows during literacy workstations. The students will develop listening skills and art vocabulary. Each month students will organize their art projects in their portfolios. Our culminating activity will be an art show. This activity will give students a forum to display their finished projects to the community, talk about the famous artists, and describe techniques they used to produce their masterpieces.

Please support me in getting the arts back into my classroom.

With your support I will incorporate new technology and supplies with our existing programs and equipment to produce the "Get Smart with Art" program. It is a standard based program that will cover standards in language arts (listening, reading, speaking, writing), social studies (art history, biographies), and visual and performing arts. It is a program any principal will love!
