Let's get SMART not Bored in the Classroom

My students need a working computer in order for our class to access the SMARTBoard we have been given. Let's make learning more accessible for my special needs kids.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried to read a book in the dark? Or use a computer with missing keys? Well this is what it is like trying to use a SMARTBoard along with not so up to date attachments. Using a SMARTBoard should open up more of the world to students but currently ours is stuck in the dark ages.

Who are my students?

They are 12 of the most colorful bunch of teenagers I have met. We are a Special Needs class of 8th grade students in New York. Our class has a mix of limitations but the one common thread among them is that they all are very hands on learners. We are in a Middle School in NY, that struggles sometimes for basic necessities and having the opportunity to use a SMARTBoard on a daily basis will be a push in the right direction. The students ask each morning if we will use the board today and it breaks my heart when their expression changes because I have to say "No, we don't have a computer to use with it."

My Project

The SMARTBoard opens up the world to students. They are no longer limited to the books in front of them but can get to the world beyond. Having a working computer to use with the SMARTBoard will allow my students to access the virtual labs associated with their books, or take virtual field trips for Social Studies. The possibilities are endless once the door is opened.

This project is so important because our children are living in a technological age.

Technology is everywhere around them and I believe it can be used in the classroom as well to reach the children that may not fully understand just by reading it in a book. Education is all about teaching the children in any way necessary in order for them to learn. If you fund this project you can know that my class and I will take full advantage of the world that a working computer will open for us.
