My Students
Can you imagine The Beatles without Ringo? The Tommy Dorsey Band without Buddy Rich? The Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts? At our school we have everything we need for a successful music program except for the heartbeat of the band, the Drum Set.
I teach instrumental music through an integrated program to high-needs students grades 7-8 in a middle school.
Many of my students are special needs students.
My students excel through hands-on learning, and music education has shown to be exceptionally valuable in helping them develop skills crucial to academic success. We have acquired a class set of guitars and keyboards through previous grants, but due to citywide budget cuts we still lack a rhythm section. The students have expressed a strong interest in learning to play drums.
My Project
It is essential to have a strong rhythm section in a band. The rhythm section is the "heartbeat" in an ensemble, it helps to keep all students playing together and improves there sense of timing. With a drum set we will not only perform better as a group, but all the students will also improve their rhythm and motor coordination skills.
In my school learning to play instruments has contributed to an increased ability to focus and motivated students to see tasks to completion.
These skills are skills that my students severely lack and their development has shown to be crucial to their academic success in core subject areas. Please help us acquire this drum set to fully develop the music program and reach more students in the process.
