My students need a listening center so they can listen to as many stories as they want during the day. Many students do not have anyone at home willing to read to them.
My students love books and look forward to listening to stories that are read to them. For many students this is the highlight of their day. Please help them have the opportunity to listen to as many as they can during their time at school.
My students do not have the best of things in their world outside of school.
Many do not have anyone at home who is willing or able to sit and read with them. A number of students come from homes where English is not the main language spoken, or their parents are having to hold jobs that do not allow them to have the time to sit and read. Our urban elementary school is 85% free and reduced lunch and 46% of the students in our school have received reading remediation during school. The teachers provide most of the supplies needed for students, due to the parents' inability to afford the supplies whenever school begins. We are a school district that is on the outskirts of a very large city school district. This location has less parental involvement due to students being bused to our school from a neighborhood of apartment complexes and houses now in a depreciated state.
My Project
Having a listening area in the room will allow them to pick a book, which is on CD, and will give them the opportunity to sit and listen to many stories. Listening to a book and following along will help them with their reading. Hearing a story can give many students the boost that is needed to pick up a book and read on their own. Help my students become the readers they are!
I want to to make sure all my students have the best educational experience while in my classroom.
With 28 1st grade students, it is hard to read to them in small groups. Having a CD player will allow them to hear a story and share that experience with other students. This listening area will allow my students to enjoy many books that are above their reading level. It will also allow my ELL (English Language Learners) additional opportunities to hear stories in English.
Thank you
