My Students
I can't put it any better than Maya Angelou, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." My greatest desire and the best reward of my job is helping kids find that book. You can help too!
Our school is focused on literacy.
Each month we focus various words that develop our students' reading skills. We use our morning video announcements to share books that our teachers love, new books that have come into the library, and books that have won awards. We celebrate I Love to Read Month and Dr. Seuss March Madness. We have book fairs and PTO Book Bingo, but our kids need more. The kids are diverse in their backgrounds and their reading levels and our library is simply not meeting a profound need.
My Project
As I said, our students are diverse in background and reading level. Reading levels vary dramatically even within a grade level. Our students love reading books. They love to check out books during their library time and share them with their friends, but the students with lower reading levels and different interests are missing out. Some of our students prefer not to read a long chapter book, but prefer to read a graphic novel that is similar in length to a chapter book. When lower readers check out these books, they are not embarrassed by having to find a book at a lower reading level because the books interest kids almost universally. The books encourage a love of reading in students and a great growth of reading skills.
Right now, our library has a very limited number of graphic novels.
By supporting this project, you will help to fill the gap in our library collection. The books will be featured prominently on their own shelf in the library and will be available for students to check out and enjoy.
