Many of my students are struggling readers and some are English Language learners. Many are below grade level in their reading levels and need a more hands-on approach to mastering their sight words. My goal is for them to improve their reading and sight word skills.
My school is in a progressively growing rural community with total enrollment in Pre-K through 5th grade of a little over 550 students.
The town population is approximately 70,000, with 17 elementary schools in the district. The diversity at our school comes from the economic levels, with approximately 45% of our students receiving free and reduced lunches. I teach in a self-contained second grade classroom. I have twenty-five students.
My Project
Many of my students came to second grade below grade level. Knowing and recognizing their sight words will improve their reading skills. Having these sight words boards will help aid in teaching and practicing sight word recognition. The hands-on activities will help them to memorize the words, which will in turn help with fluency as they grow in their reading abilities.
Your donation will allow many students the opportunity to have a hands-on, fun way to practice and master their sight word recognition for reading which is essential for beginning readers.
Using the sight word boards will give my students hands on practice that allows them to see it, spell it, write it, and hear it which will help them learn the sight words faster. Becoming a good reader is the most important part of becoming a successful student and adult in the future.
