As a speech language pathologist I support students with unique communication needs in a variety of early learning and elementary classrooms. Many of the students in these classrooms have a diagnosis of autism or delays in language. The students in these classrooms represent a diverse section of our city that is often over looked. Every day the students enter the room ready to learn and work together.
My students benefit from colorful images and motivating visuals to help support communication and understanding during play and learning.
Many of the students in these classes come from low-income families with limited access to books and pictures. A lot of these students have limited experience with reading and listening to story or picture books at home. I want to help them develop a love of reading by using visuals and providing exposure to simple story books.
My Project
Help bring storybooks to life with fun, engaging stories and brightly colored picture symbols. Heavy duty card-stock paper, packing tape and books are needed to give my students access to adapted story books. By providing my students exposure to these books, I can support them in learning and progressing in the area of communication.
Help my students develop a love of reading and communicating by providing them with access to simple stories and engaging visuals.
By focusing on books with repetitive phrases I will expose my students to learning high frequency words in an exciting way. High frequency words including: more, go, on, me, good, you, and see will be highlighted on the pages of these books. These words will help my students begin to communicate more in literacy activities.
