This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a highest poverty school in an inner city urban district. They all have IEPs for reading or math.
Because of their low levels of reading achievement, I am always looking for ways to get them to read.
I am only one teacher and I cannot always give them the attention they need to practice reading. Reading independently for a student who has reading difficulties is often a struggle. I want them to be able to practice their independent reading accurately and fluently.
The students will be able to experience a three-pronged approach to reading. They will hear the correct pacing, hear the correct pronunciation, and most importantly hear good expression. They are able to read it as many times as necessary before reading to me and answering comprehension questions.
My Project
My project will buy personal CD players for the Lab. I have a specific program that has reading CD's that is geared for each reading level from pre-primer through fourth grade.
These materials will enable my students to practice reading and hearing how selected texts should sound.
Emphasis is put on fluency and expression, whether reading silently or orally.
Reading without paying attention to periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation marks can really impede fluency and comprehension. The old joke of grammar saves lives is an oldie but goodie. "Let's eat, Grandma." versus "Let's eat Grandma." is a prime example of how my students might read a sentence. Hearing what good reading sounds like should increase their rate of comprehension. They will not be hearing themselves read without expression or flat intonation. They will also be paying attention to following correct grammar cues.
Making these CD players available to my students allows them to read at any time. I don't have to be right next to them. When they are ready they will come to me and read with confidence - AND expression!
