This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember a time when you were actually able to SEE the growth that you had made? These portfolios will serve as a data center for each student so that they will have the ability to track their growth and progress. This will allow them to take control of their learning.
My students are third graders at a high poverty school in Arizona.
The state of Arizona doesn't give schools much funding and our budgets are always being cut. Despite this fact, the students and teachers at this school do what they can to support each other so that the students have a chance to succeed. While this community does not have much, I have watched as the school and students pulled together to organize food and blanket drives to help the homeless, sponsored each other with the Christmas Angel project, and have even joined forces with St. Mary's food bank to open up a community outreach once a month to help feed the hungry in our area by holding a food bank at our school!
My Project
I am requesting an eight, pocket portfolio for each of my students. They will be able to keep track of their weekly spelling, their reading fluency, their multiplication and division facts. Every pocket will have a use and the students can chart their progress as well. I believe my students will take ownership and pride at being able to display their learning in this way. I also intend to have them show their parents how much they've grown at conferences using these portfolios. My students will learn how to track and take responsibility for their learning goals.
My project is important because while we constantly throw tests and assessments at students, we never really allow them a way to see the progress that they have made.
These binders will allow them to chart and graph their progress as well as save samples of their work to share.
