My Students
"None of us is as smart as all of us."
-Ken Blanchard
No doubt that with dry erase boards to go along with our whole group instruction, my small group of people would be well on their way to changing their way of thinking and learning.
My students are the most amazing bunch of 4th graders you will ever meet.
A lot of them have encountered struggles I could never imagine, but their struggles never seem to keep them down. They come in each day with an insatiable desire for more. More love...more knowledge...more understanding...and more of me. They are filled with an obvious appreciation and love for education, although most cannot afford the proper resources to succeed. Some of the most poverty-stricken neighborhoods in our area are nestled in our school district. About 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some have been displaced from homes because of horrible circumstances. Even through all they encounter each day, they still desire and deserve an education that will allow them to reach their dreams.
My Project
Managing 40 students isn't an easy feat, especially when it comes to makeup work. My students will be able to take responsibility for their own learning by checking their mailbox when they have been absent to find out what they need to do. A classroom mailbox would also help students communicate with me when they need to let me know something. This will help instill responsibility and organizational skills in my students.
A lot of our whole group math lessons take place on our carpet where we are able to discuss and communicate different strategies. With each student having their own dry erase board, they can easily communicate their strategies with me, as well as their peers. This will help me to assess who has mastered content, and who may still be struggling.
Donations to this classroom project will help to bring some structure and organization into the lives of my students.
Students will love meeting on the carpet, excited to share their own way of thinking with the dry erase boards and markers. They will never have to worry about missing assignments because they can check their mailbox as soon as they return from an absence and get caught up without missing a beat!
