Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach to a group of 100 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in a lower-income part of East San Diego County. My students are resilient and face every challenge they meet head on. They are positive role models who want to make changes in the world for the better.
This year, we are working on growth mindset and healthy minds and bodies.
I want my students to have opportunities to work out in a safe and effective manner. Participating in Physical Education gets our students' oxygen flowing and prepares their brains for their academic learning in the classroom.
My Project
As Physical Education has become an essential part of our daily teaching routine, our students need quality mats that will protect their hands and knees when doing exercises outside.
We offer a strength training boot camp as one of our rotations for PE.
These mats would ensure our students can learn to exercise properly and do push-ups, sit-ups, planks, and other exercises without getting dirty or being injured. We need mats that we can easily carry to our ampitheater and auditorium.
I also would love to do some lessons in yoga, in which a mat is required to help with stability and balance. The calming nature of yoga practice allows students to focus, a skill that is beneficial for life. All in all, having these mats will allow us to have a balanced PE program.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
