This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income, high-poverty area. Many students are English Language Learners and need experience with being outdoors. They may not have many opportunities to play outside after school due to lack of supervision or a lack of safety.
The majority of the students at the school qualify for free lunches.
Many come to school hungry and tired because their families are concerned with affording day to day necessities. The school is a safe haven for many students. They need to create good, healthy habits that will last for their entire lives.
My Project
"Why don't we have more P.E. equipment?" This question is asked more than a few times a week by students in my class. I reply that we have a red ball for handball and some old jump ropes. However, the students do not consider 1 ball and a couple of old jump ropes good Physical Education equipment. The students have come up with other types of equipment to really get their fitness up to par.
They would like equipment such as balance boards and a balance course to help them with balance and core strength, which will get them moving!
They will then work in pairs to work on recording the progress made within the school year.
They need activity mats to engage in fun, partner activity such as hopping, doing jumping jacks, and running in place. They need to know that fitness is fun!
