My Students
I anticipate having 24 eager and energetic 3rd grade students who enjoy working collaboratively in partnerships, enjoy moving around the classroom and frequently engage in critical thinking.
The school that I work in consists of K-5 elementary students.
We are a National Blue Ribbon School and take part in the Green School initiative. Our school is a Culture of Thinking school that takes part in many critical thinking activities. My students thrive on frequent movement and peer interactions throughout our day.
My Project
To accommodate frequent movement of students I have transformed my classroom into a flexible seating environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose a space in the classroom to work - whether it be a space on the floor, standing at a table or sitting at a traditional desk. Flexible seating gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them. This environment allows them to easily work in partnerships, communicate effectively, move around frequently, and engage in critical thinking more easily. Having many seating options will continue to foster this environment by providing additional choices for students. At the end of last year I surveyed my students to find out which seating options best fit their needs, and which items they would like to see in the future. This survey inspired the items I have selected for this project!! Students requested tall seating options, something to "bounce" on, wobble stools or chairs, and more bumpy seats. Students will use the tall stools to sit at raised desks allowing them to hang or swing their feet as they work. Bumpy seats will help my fidgety learners sit in a traditional classroom chair or on one of the tall stools. Adding a balance ball chair to my classroom will allow students to wiggle as they work without disrupting others. The ability to move around while sitting has helped my students to be more attentive and focused. These various seating options will keep my kids moving throughout the day keeping them engaged and energized!!
