This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
I want my students to experience what it's like to get lost in a GREAT book.
I work in a low socioeconomic area.
My students don't always have access to books, fiction or non-fiction. I try to provide them with as many literacy opportunities as possible. I do this by taking them to the school library (which is another topic altogether), as well as giving them access to books in my classroom library.
My students are, and always have been, inquisitive. Their questions that propel them forward in their learning are like little jewels of knowledge. They embrace new academic challenges with a fearless enthusiasm that is refreshing. I want to encourage their enthusiasm by implementing core literature into our daily routine.
My Project
With the implementation of Common Core, I have found that my curriculum is more flexible than it has been for a long time, which I love. According to Common Core, the students should know how to read and understand 5th grade fiction text. They need to be able to analyze character traits, compare and contrast, and summarize...the list goes on!!!
Class sets of Bud, Not Buddy and The Little Prince will provide students with engaging, classic literature to put into practice all that they need to experience during their 5th grade year.
Class set of the Bud, Not Buddy and The Little Prince will change my students' for the better because they are examples of classic literature and story telling.
That will motivate them (and me!) to dig into the Common Core Standards, which will result in students that can think critically and academically.
