My Students
I have been given the opportunity to teach a pilot curriculum at my new middle school. This curriculum involves teaching about apartheid South Africa, something many of my students know nothing about. This curriculum specifically is a passion project for myself.
One of the reasons my students are deserving of this donation is because in the area of Charlotte they live in has a low socio-economic status, some of who are homeless, yet they are still academically gifted despite their hardships.
I teach 7th grade students who have shown me that despite everything they have going on outside of the classroom, they come in every day ready to learn and interested in the materials I am teaching them. A majority of my scholars excel at at least a grade level above in reading levels, which is a big deal as some of the other scholars in the school are one to two grade levels behind in reading and math.
My Project
My scholars like reading but I want to make it “lit” for them. To do this, I need to find relevant books to fill my classroom library that they will want to read. These books will be used for a book club initiative where students will choose a book, read it during homeroom, and then at the end of the month, share about their book to their classmates! We will keep a running total of which books scholars liked the best and rate them, like GoodReads and other websites do. One of the most influential things in middle school is what other people think, so why not take that and turn it into a “lit” thing!
