This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are second graders from a high poverty school. My students are very inquisitive and love science, math, reading and hands-on and fast-paced projects; however, funds are limited.
I want to enable my students to be more independent by giving them the tools they need to follow instructions.
Legos allow them to do this in a fun and interactive way. My students are high poverty, and many of them have limited access to Legos at home. I want to give my students the opportunity to build with support, learning to follow instructions, while attending to precision. Teaching them now how to build with Legos will help them later on when they try to build furniture out of a box, follow a recipe to cook/bake and improve their motor skills as they place small bricks atop each other and connect them.
My Project
These Lego building kits allow the entire second grade at my school to learn how to follow instructions, attend to precision (a mathematical standard which is reinforced when students use the correct Lego brick at the correct time/location in the building process), and build their fine motor skills. Being able to build with Legos helps improve their ability to follow instructions, recipes and other forms of informational text.
Building Lego kits helps to better prepare students for the future, by teaching them to follow instructions.
Later in life they will be able to build furniture, make food by following recipes and get information from text.
