Let's Get Healthy!

My project needs 10 jump ropes, 2 weight scales, 5 pedometers, graph paper, a pencil sharpener, magnets, markers, and colored pencils.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Stewin's classroom raised $420

This project is fully funded

C'mon all of you couch potatoes! Get off the couch and get healthy! I work in low income community at a public school on the West Side of Chicago. There is an urgent need to develop a curriculum that incorporates instruction on healthy eating along with exercise. My school district does not allow outdoor recess. My students receive physical education class once per week for 40 minutes. My students would much rather watch TV after school or play video games. There is no park within walking distance. The community that my students live in is not always safe, and many parents do not allow their children to play outside after school. I want to find a way to use my student's energy to help them get the physical exercise they need as well as provide them with the tools to be healthy for the rest of their lives.

I teach 23 second grade African American students. They are amazing and have an abundant amount of energy! Unfortunately, they have little opportunity within the school day and the curriculum to put this energy to good use. Help me give my students the "running start" they need to be active and healthy. This physical exercise will help to sharpen their minds, body and spirit!

This project needs jump ropes, a scale to monitor out weight progress, pedometers to help count the steps we take and the calories that we burn, chart paper so that we monitor our progress along the way, markers and pencils to create graphs and charts, and magnets to display our projects proudly around the room.

Help us be healthy in our daily lives. Just think, the lessons we teach these children today can help to empower and keep them healthy in the future. These lessons learned today will be shared with family members at home and help a community become healthy!
