Let's Get Fit!

My students need fitness equipment. I am asking for fitness cards that I can set around the gym with easy cues and instructions for elementary age students.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Emmett's classroom raised $248

My Students

Two students help lead stretches. After stretches, it's 2 laps around the gym. Then we describe what we will be doing and we start quickly. The pace of the class is fast to keep the students moving as much as possible with as limited down time as possible.

Remember when you couldn't wait for art or music or even PE?

These students have waited for 3 years. The school district has come out of its financial downfall and rehired several cultural arts teachers to reintroduce the students to it. The 5th graders have not had arts since 1st grade and several still can't perform a skip. I am in charge of 4 schools so each school has me for a week and depending on the size of the school, students will see me between 9 and 18 times the entire year. It is urgent to introduce them to as much content as I can fit in. They have already covered low-organized games and loco motor movements. Next is foot and hand manipulation (soccer and basketball). After winter break, I would like to start on fitness before moving on to other sports.

My Project

My students will use these fitness cards to improve their fitness level. The classes will be split up into small groups and scattered to several different stations. From there, a rotation will be described and a time limit given. We will find our resting heart rate and time it before they start. Students will perform all the exercises in the allotted time before moving to the next station when the whistle blows. At the end of their complete rotation, they will take their heart rate and see how much it has increased. Student will learn about resting heart rate, target heart rate and maximum heart rate and how to find it on their own using the fingers on their neck or wrist. They will learn how the heart works and why it increases and decreases in rate.

I can already tell that childhood obesity has begun with many of these children because of the absence of physical education.

I am not a light man and I have several 5th graders who are heavier than me. These fitness cards will help fight it as much as I can possibly try, despite only seeing them a limited amount of times. In time, when cultural arts come back full-time and I teach at only one location, I can buckle down and fight it on my side and improve their chances to be fit in life.
