My students need 2 election activity kits, 2 posters, 1 activity book, 5 nonfiction and fiction readers and class subscriptions to Weekly Reader and Time for Kids.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a fifth grade teacher at a low-income urban school. This school year I will have an inclusion group of special education students as well as a group of English language learners.
I teach my students that, as fifth graders, they are the leaders of our school and have the responsibility to be strong, motivating role models for their peers. In that spirit, my special education co-worker and I have decided to take on the task of teaching the November election in-depth, culminating in student-led debates about the candidates in front of the whole school and a schoolwide election.
I've asked for a wide variety of texts to allow every student in my class to learn about the voting process. Some are fiction picture books and some are teacher activity books which will provide us with worksheets we can do together as a class. I've also requested class sets of two different newspaper-style publications: Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. I want my students to use a critical eye and facts to create their opinions about the presidential candidates, and comparing and contrasting two news resources will really strengthen their knowledge. Finally, I've asked for two election activity kits for my students to use for the schoolwide election.
As the song goes, I believe the children are our future. But today, many children (and adults) are much more interested in technology and entertainment than in current events and politics. I hope to inspire my students to learn more about the people that lead our country and the role that each student can play in determining their leaders. Please help me give my students the tools they need to become great leaders in our school and community!
