This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These past eight months of teaching music to my general ed and special needs classes have been a mutual joy! Even with masks on, I can see how excited they are to move, sing, and play instruments!
However, it has become apparent that engaging in activities together in assigned cohorts requires more than expected for both students and teachers.
Students have returned to campus with various levels of anxiety and, at times, appropriate social skills that affect their personal engagement while making music with others.
As the year continues, more inclusion of social-emotional materials is still necessary to help learn/re-learn ways to communicate in a positive and safe manner.
I believe that the students can benefit from additional supplies such as new sensory items for the class "Calm Corner," art/music materials for more social-emotional experiences, and new resources from Teachers Pay Teachers that focus on these issues.
My hope is for all students to feel ready to "be engaged" during music class with activities that can help them through the rest of the day while building self-confidence and musicianship!
