I am a Special Education teacher in a Third Grade Integrated Co-Teach Class where there are Special Education students learning alongside General Education students.
Even though we are quarantining, our students continue to have an eagerness to learn!
Distance teaching and learning has been challenging, however, we are making it work and students are engaged! I am even implemented a shared platform where students can post and chat with each other! That has been a great success!
We are in constant contact with our students over several platforms, via text, email, and phone. I gave my students my home number so that they can call any time at all to just say hello. And they are calling! I love hearing their voices and they enjoy speaking with me.
Each student is unique and special in his or her own way! All students learn in different ways and show what they know in different ways! We need to always keep that in mind!
My Project
Our school consists of culturally and linguistically diverse students within a low socioeconomic community. Our special education students have been diagnosed with various exceptionalities including learning difficulties, speech impairments, ADHD, Autism, and sensory issues.
Knowing that schools will not be reopening this academic year makes it all the more important for teachers to start planning how to best welcome students back to an inviting classroom!
We have to keep in mind that students will need to be given the opportunity to vent and express what they have experienced.
What better way that through art? Our students are expressive! They also enjoy writing and sharing their writing with their peers! And they love to create! What is more precious than a child hand-making a gift for a loved one!
Children are creative! Can you imagine the joy that students who struggle to communicate and express themselves would experience by creating a one-of-a-kind project? Being able to do so would enable all students to tap into their crafty sides and become artists!
Craft sticks, pom poms, googly eyes, sequins, doilies, paint, brushes and yarn will bring our students such joy, and give them the ability to create and express their ideas! The flower garden kit which students will decorate and grow flowers in will make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift!
Help us avail our students the opportunity to be individuals and express themselves in their own individual way!
