Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. While 40% of our students are considered English language learners, Spanish is the home language of 90% of our students. Many of our students are struggling readers, but work hard to reach their reading and math goals during the school year.

The students are excited, engaged, curious, and are hard workers.

They are eager to become better readers and mathematicians.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their early lives have been turnnd upside down. Besides dealing with the personal impacts of COVID-19 impacting their families and community, it completely disrupted their education as we worked to provide meaningful virtual learning opportunities, focused on social emotional learning, while struggling to get devices in their hands to support this "new normal". In all this time, my students remained eager, persistent and hungry to learn and succeed.

My Project

Students are in the midst of learning in an environment we never would have imagined before. My students are learning through a "blended" model, meaning they spend 2 days learning at home and two days learning together in the school building. Currently, we do not have any devices in the classroom to support this hybrid model. It is a challenge and safety risk for my 4th graders to bring their devices back and forth, which limits the opportunities I can provide them.

My students will use these tablets to connect, inspire, research, read, and take action in their communities.

They are motivated, interested, and engaged in the world they are growing up in and want to make a difference. The devices give them the tools, directly in their own hands, to do just that.

By providing 1:1 tablets to use in the classroom, students will have the opportunity to explore the civic action issues that are important to them and their future and integrate the learning platforms we are currently using. They will read and research about current events, write articles and persuasive letters to their community leaders, take virtual trips and watch videos, just to name a few possibilities.
