Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. While 40% of our students are considered English language learners, Spanish is the home language of 90% of our students. Many of our students are struggling readers, but work hard to reach their reading and math goals during the school year.

The students are excited, engaged, curious, hard workers and are eager to become better readers and mathematicians.

During math, we are solving multi-step word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and expressing our different methods for solving, while analyzing right and wrong answers. But now, it’s more important than ever for my students to be fully engrossed in the world of STEM. It’s important for me to engage my students to ask questions & search for solutions. It’s important for them to create and challenge. To imagine and innovate. To know they can become a STEM leader by exposing them to resources showcasing individuals that look like them.

My Project

Students are in the midst of learning in an environment we never would have imagined before. My students are "blended", meaning they spend 2 days learning at home and two days learning together in the school building. Currently, we do not have any devices in the classroom to support this hybrid model. It is a challenge & safety risk for my fourth graders to bring their devices back and forth, which limits the opportunities I can provide them.

My students will use these tablets to connect, inspire, research, read and take action in their communities.

I want to provide opportunities to think outside the box & know that they have the power to make a difference.

By providing 1:1 tablets to use in the classroom, students will have the opportunity to explore the STEM resources provided as part of the IF/THEN collection. It is important for my students as English Language Learners, to learn more about the opportunities that are available to them, especially my young girls. It is so crucial at this stage in their lives to see, read, hear and be inspired by women that look and sound like them. With these tablets, students can actively take part in experiences that will drastically change their lives and open up their worlds.
