My Students

My students attend a small, rural charter school that consists of a variety of backgrounds of students. Students arrive at our campus from a large number of elementary schools in our area. Because of the various backgrounds, teachers work extremely hard to build connections with students through experiences.

In our classroom, we do this by reading engaging texts that reflect the diversity of our world.

Students engage in activities that require conversation and critical thinking, as well as collaboration. Through these, students learn about one another, our community, and our world. My students love to read and are always begging for more time to dig into books.

My Project

Being a middle school student can be difficult. Creating a classroom environment that allows students to feel safe and able to take a risk is important. As an ELA classroom, this is often done through the simple act of reading. Escaping into a book can bring the mental break that some students need. Our classroom needs a couch to create an inviting space for students.

A comfortable, cozy couch in our classroom will allow students to kick back and relax with a good book during our ELA block.

The couch will also be used as an area students can go to calm themselves or to have conferences with teachers. Reducing the stress in a middle school student's life is critical to the learning process.
