As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. I want to give my students every opportunity to achieve classroom goals.
Every child can learn, just not the same way or the same day.
My students are hard workers and eager to learn each day they walk through my classroom door! They are excited to explore the world through reading a good book. They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
My Project
When it's time for independent reading, I noticed students did not enjoy just sitting at their desk to read. One student even expressed how she enjoyed reading, but wanted a comfy, cozy spot to read independently. But imagine how inviting it would be to have comfy pillows in a reading corner to sit on while enjoying a good book! The problem is that right now we don't have ANY cozy spots. I know that if I fix this seating problem with comfy pillows to help create a reading corner, my students will be flocking to it to read!
A classroom should be a welcoming place where children feel comfortable and enjoy learning.
With only straight-back chairs at desks and the hard floor as seating, my students often dislike tasks that require a lot of sitting still, like independent reading practice. With your help, I can create a reading corner that will be our room's most inviting spot by providing a comfy seating option! Soon we'll need a waiting list for the independent reading center!
