This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In this project I am requesting a litany of books to fill the shelves of the library of our classroom so that the students can have a plethora of appropriate and engaging material to read through. This is also for a few books which will be read together and analyzed using CLOSE reading strategies. These texts are award winning novels and pieces of literature, some from my own upbringing, others from research, and some too from fellow educators as I have watched children take a liking to a piece of text a teacher passionately shared with them.
These books will help my students broaden the depth of their love for reading and enable them to more easily engage with academic content and literary analysis.
Improving reading comprehension and literary skills overall is a huge goal for educators across the board and our classroom is no exception to that. The students in my classroom have the drive to succeed and they value text that engages their mind and forces them to stop and think about what the text might be asking of them or telling to them. The curriculum provides many materials for students, however there are far too few opportunities to engage directly with interesting and meaningful text in order to apply the learned skills.
By acquiring these additional books to utilize for small group instruction I will be able to better engage the students. The themes of the books are areas of expressed interest by the students or relatable characters that have an iconic hold on children when they read through the text. In addition to those books which will serve as cultural literacy enhancement as well as being academic tools there is a wealth of books being loved by students in their free time in the classroom library.
