My Students
It's wonderful to relax and stretch out the stress and anxiety from a long day! Yoga is a wonderful way for special needs children to incorporate balance, a sense of well being and breathing exercises into their day. They can improve their concentration skills while toning and building stability.
My students are kindergarten age special education students.
They have a variety of disabilities including autism, developmental delays, emotional disabilities, other health impairments and cognitive delays. My students live in a high poverty area. My classroom is in a public school in Illinois. Some of my students attended a half-day Pre-K special education classroom, but others haven't had previous schooling experiences. My students love school, experimenting and learning through hands-on materials. They love their friends and teachers. Since they come from a high poverty area, their previous life experiences have been limited. Being a member of this classroom family gives them a chance to spread their wings!
My Project
My students need Yoga Cards, music for yoga exercises, DVDs to learn yoga, social stories and games to promote physical and mental health and discipline. Many of my students live in homes where there is stress throughout their day. It is hard for them to relax and focus. Yoga would provide them with the opportunity to get away from these troubles and relax for a period of time. Taking time to focus would help them concentrate on their studies.
Please help us learn techniques to decrease our stress and anxiety levels.
Learning to concentrate will help our ADHD children. Practicing yoga postures will help physically challenged children with mobility and core stability. Hearing the social stories will help us learn to make good choices. Thank you for caring for us!
