I teach at a gifted magnet school in a large urban school district. We are a multicultural school using voluntary integration. My class has a large variety of home languages: Bangla, Spanish, Punjabi, Tagalog, Armenian, Bulgarian, Mandarin, and Russian to name a few. In second grade we have an emphasis on ancestors and heritage so this makes for a very interesting year! My students come from a variety of neighborhoods, and most are bussed to our school. My students welcome each new student with open arms. It's a really positive environment!
Our school allows students who may not appear gifted due to language or socio-economic status a chance to shine and develop their talents.
My Project
I really wanted to be able to teach from my school classroom this fall. But when I returned to my classroom to set up and tried to sign on to my computer to take a webinar last week, both my desktop and laptop were not workable. My desktop, which is at least 15 years old, does not have a web cam, refused to boot up. My laptop, which is 10 years old, couldn't log onto Zoom. I had to use a Chromebook to take the webinar, but that device cannot be used to teach from a distance. Our district is not giving schools money for devices for teachers. So I am stuck teaching from home. I would like to use this device so I can have my students use my lessons more interactively and be able to collaborate with each other, which will build our new community and keep students engaged in all our subject areas.
