Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a wonderful group of 25 imaginative, loving, fourth graders. Our class moves around constantly and works together cooperatively in many different ways throughout the day. I am a firm believer that each student has a unique learning style, and I'd like to respect that by providing them the freedom to find comfortable spaces around the room to work.

My 4th-grade class consists of a hands-on, project-based, whole-brain learning classroom that relies on differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all my students.

I have students of all levels from gifted students to high achieving whose comprehension/logistic skills can start at a 4th-grade level, but succeed to 12th-grade learners. To make sure I meet all of their needs I provide lessons that will not only help them learn but also inspire them to dig deeper. Many of our lessons are collaborative efforts that the students need the capability to move around our classroom.

My Project

After a year of online learning, my students need the opportunity to come back to a warm inviting classroom of flexible seating to help enhance their social experience. The students can use the flexible seating options to work in small groups, peer-to-peer, or independent learning fashions. For the past year, my students have been learning at home alone staring at a screen. It is time for them to have the opportunities to move around the room, work with other socially and to let their creativity soar.

My students are the shining stars in my life, they love to talk, laugh, love, and learn in our classroom.

They love to lie on the carpet or sit on the carpet to work comfortably. After the pandemic, they have not had the opportunities to experience this.

Our classroom is filled with traditional tables and chairs where my students spend a good amount of their time independently working. This seating works fine for some activities, but my students always desire the option of movement while they work. Also, they need to learn how to cooperatively work with other students in class as an essential life skill.

Allowing my students to get out of their seats and work in a more comfortable area helps them stay motivated and focused. As an adult, I LOVE having the option of flexible seating for myself, so of course, why wouldn't students love it too?

Giving the option of a comfortable, flexible seat to read independently, work in small groups or just listen to a story is a great way to get the best out of every student, especially after a full year of being home learning from a screen.
