Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Fred Rogers once said "Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning." Play is the important thing for a child to do to enhance in all areas of development.
I have 34, Pre-school age students, who are predominantly from a Latino/Hispanic background with a few African/American students.
For many of them, their first language is Spanish and unfortunately, they are living within the poverty guidelines. However, they are extremely enthusiastic about coming to school every day and learning new things. They're in need of the experiences that every child deserves..The Pre-K students do not receive a gym period in the school and these materials are not available to the Pre-school students. I, unfortunately, am only capable of providing them with so much gross-motor activity in the classroom without the use of actual gross-motor materials. In addition, these students do not have enough physical activity at home due to the high criminal activities in the neighborhood, which hinder them from playing outside. I hope that through this grant I can receive three pieces of equipment to help with increasing their active play, a Redmon Fun and Fitness Exercise Equipment for Kids-Tread Mill, Happy Bike, and Fitness Dumbbell Set.
My Project
I am hoping through daily exercise and movement, the students will understand the importance of being physically active and how it affects the mind and body. There will be an exercise station/center in the classroom for the students to increase gross motor skills. Through these gross motor activities students are going to increase social and academic skills. Students will learn turn-taking, promote team building and cooperation, and develop a positive self-confidence. The activities will be tied to nutrition, music, science and language arts. Through differentiated instruction students will learn new vocabulary, increase language skills through writing, and learn awareness of physical changes within themselves. In addition, through these activities students will release their energy and learn to focus better in the classroom.
Through this grant students are going to learn the importance of living a healthy active life and using gross-motor activities to increase academic knowledge in language arts, reading, math, science, and social studies.
Due to safety and environmental concerns in the community, many of my students do not have the opportunities to play outside and/or have indoor activities that require movement. Implementing this into my curriculum will provide for those opportunities.
