This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a kindergarten class of excited, energetic learners. We love doing hands on activities about topics that are relevant to our every day lives. Science and experimentation is a huge part of growing our young minds. By the end of the year we want to be rich in science knowledge.
We are a classroom of 20 English language learners.
We are a very close knit school with students that are not afforded many opportunities that other students our age across the district may receive. We try our best despite our economical challenges and we definitely make the best out of what we have. We work very hard as a team to further our knowledge of real world topics so that we can be contributing members of our community one day. We are happy, energetic kids that just want the chance to explore and learn new things. My students come from very low economic situations and do not have the experiences or materials other students may receive. It is so rewarding to see them feel so proud about getting their own magazine that they can take home and share with their families.
My Project
I have done this magazine in my classroom for 2 years now and it has been a great tool. We do a science lesson each Friday with the magazine. This magazine helps in so many different areas. We can focus on our reading skills while learning new science topics. We use the online resources for skills such as sorting, sequencing and language arts. I create a mini lesson to send home with the students for the parents to work with them and extend the learning outside of the classroom. This helps parents become involved in a rigorous and relevant learning experience with their child. Most of the topics are common core related and fit perfectly within our units as an extension of the required teaching. The magazine is a fresh, exciting way to present a topic to my students. Because my students are in a very low economic situation at home they do not own many if any books. Although not much to some, getting to take home this magazine is so exciting for them.
After doing this project for 2 years, I can see this resource benefits my students in a huge way.
As science has become a subject that is not at the forefront in the classroom this tool is a great way for me to introduce exciting, engaging science material for my students on a level that is very age appropriate. Because we are such a low socioeconomic school much of my school budget goes towards school supplies students can't afford therefore extras like this aren't always available.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
