This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In Mrs. Fisher's class we believe reading is the gateway to all things possible. We have a high focus on reading not only for information but for fun as well!
I am the proud teacher of 20 wonderful ESL students.
Our school is considered a very high poverty school with 98.6% of our school on free and reduced lunch. Because of the high poverty in our school, many if not all of my students do not have books or reading material in their homes. Many of our students are the first in their families to attend school. Despite their stressful living situations, my students come in every day eager and ready to learn. They do not let their circumstances hold them back in any way possible. They are always happy and work great as a team to create our own little family within our school.
My Project
I am requesting weekly subscriptions of magazines for my students. We will explore these in class together. After using them in class the students will take them home along with a mini activity I have created to do with their parents. Parents always ask me how they can help their children at home. Because of their limited resources it is hard for them. This will give them a great way to feel like they have a resource and guide of what to do with their children. It also promotes interaction that I believe will promote healthy family dynamics. From these magazines my students will learn about different science topics, they will practice effective group work, and they will also extend their learning at home with their families.
This project will make a difference in my classroom for many reasons.
It will improve opportunities for parents to work with students at home. It will give students a take home resource to extend their learning. Finally, it will help integrate science and hands on activities into the classroom. This magazine addresses topics that my ESL students may not be subjected to otherwise and is a great way for them to be introduced to those topics. Finally, it brings FUN into Mrs. Fisher's room!
