it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In these dog days of budget cuts, lay-offs, and the like, nobody in educational administration is spending money on music. Literally, our music budget last year was NOTHING! But, we are finding a way to bring music to our kids.
We are building the new model of the school music program: rock and folk music.
Instead of learning saxophones and trumpets, and forming a squeaky jazz band, we are learning Bob Marley and Tom Petty tunes, and forming rock bands! These elementary students are learning guitars, keyboards, drums, singing, and are doing awesome!
My Project
Last year, we had adults fill in a few of the important roles in the band: drums and bass. This year, I would like the band to be all kids! This includes bass. A few of our more talented guitarists could transition to bass, but - sadly - we don't have the required materials. We need need an electric bass guitar, an amp, a case, a cable, and a strap for our band.
I don't have to tell you how inspiring it is to see kids playing in a band.
The camaraderie they develop, the physical and intellectual skills they harness, hearing their friends cheer for them - - it's magic! Thank you to DonorsChoose which has been the saving grace of our music program, hands down.
