This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are proud of their urban community but are faced with several obstacles both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students have very little opportunity for enriching life experiences, and they enjoy being in a classroom, which provides them with a sense of structure, continuity, and safety.
My students thrive when challenged and are eager to succeed, but some do not have the means outside of school.
My students are wildly creative, inquisitive, and spontaneous. They like to move. They love to do hands-on activities, and they crave positive reinforcement.
Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their household income. From the moment they walk into my classroom, I try my best to focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my learners to challenge themselves.
My Project
Did you know that having a classroom library stocked with science and math titles can improve your students' love of these content areas while helping them become more well-rounded readers?
There is a correlation between students' love of reading and their access to books.
Students with greater access have better attitudes about reading, reading achievement, and comprehension in comparison to students with less access to books.
Classroom libraries increase students' volume of voluntary reading, which is defined as the number of books that students choose to read independently and the time they spend reading. I would LOVE to expand my science lab classroom library to include both fiction and nonfiction books dealing with math and science aimed at promoting curiosity by exposing students to a range of topics and information.
