My Students
I am the school Guidance Counselor and Basketball Coach at a Title I elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. Our neighborhood school has a multitude of diverse students from many different cultures and backgrounds.
Allowing children to participate in youth sports is a strong way for children to explore and develop lifelong skills.
Youth sports not only play an important role in exercise but also promotes mental and psychological advances as well. As our school's Basketball Coach, I recognize that organized sports can be a powerful tool to reach many of my young boys and girls who are struggling to find their balance and purpose.
With the equipment and materials for our new afterschool clubs and sports teams, I can help them achieve personal responsibility so they can succeed academically and socially.
With funding so limited in our school, money for games and kits are non-existent. I'm reaching out for help so we can develop minds of our future leaders.
My Project
Our school's new Chess Club is overwhelmed with the number of applicants who want to learn the game of chess. Through the generosity of a wonderful donor, we were supplied chess sets and timers for a small group of students. I believe that chess is a game that teaches children math, strategic thinking, and teamwork. What better game to expand in our school?
Now, I'm requesting an additional Teacher Chess set and four timers to accommodate another chess table.
The chess set will be used by different players as we learn the strategy and logic of the game. I use the Chess for Kids book to help those students who need to see the written word for better comprehension. It will also help me plan different strategy lessons.
While using our heads is great, I also want my chess players to jump between games. We'll use these jump ropes to get our hearts pumping and clear our heads for the next "Check Mate"!
