This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love my class; whether I am clear-eyed or bleary-eyed, energetic, or exhausted - I am always happy to see my students. They mean the world to me and deserve so much more than I can give them on my own. Thank you so much for considering making a donation to my project.

My Kindergarteners are full of curiosity, joy, and boundless energy.

Ours is an inner-city school, classified as Title I, and more than half of our students are classified as English Learners. But they are more than just their language designation or their income levels, they are students with high potential, and an earnest desire to learn about the world around them. With your generous help, we can all ensure that these students have access to the tools they need to grow their minds and abilities in a learning environment that celebrates their language and culture.

My Project

My students enjoy visual arts immensely, but hardly get the opportunity to create. Budget cuts and increased academic expectations imply that the arts do not matter and have nothing to do with intellectual and academic achievement. With your donation of these materials, I hope to counter that narrative.

Help my students channel their inner artists as they use the materials to exercise their first amendment rights.

Block printing has long been used as a means of expressing opinions, and as my students and I enter into a study of civic engagement in social studies, I would like to guide them in the use of these materials to make a statement.

These materials will afford me the opportunity to enhance our study of Día de Muertos to include José Guadalupe Posada's history and creation of the iconic "Catrina" skull block print, which has become inextricably linked to Day of the Dead, but which began as a social critique. I will also use the color inks to incorporate a "Campbell Soup" (Andy Warhol) and Pop art history lesson.
