My Project

Our science department members firmly believe that our middle school students should build understanding of science concepts through frequent discovery activities, careful observation, discussion, learning how to derive formulas and explanations rather than rely on memorization, and using science process skills.

Having students DO science rather than read about it in a textbook requires a wide variety of materials!

The silent (yay!) timers and replacement batteries will be used in science activities in all disciplines, including recording times of chemical reactions, measuring pulse and heart rate, comparing thermal differences in water, sand, and soil, determining how long engineered structures can withstand seismic shaking, and collecting data to perform calculations in multiple kinematics labs indoors and outside. Students will use the clipboards when doing scientific sketching outdoors, keeping logs of aquarium water testing, attending field trips, and recording data when doing labs away from tables or counters. Our students learn how to use compound and dissecting stereomicroscopes and mount their own slides, so they go through a lot of small, nearly invisible, and easily scratched coverslips.

Some students take on the responsibility of being teacher aides for one of their elective classes and help prepare, organize, and clean materials for activities and assignments. Document sorters will help these students alphabetize student work, papers such as field trip permission slips, or organize pre-cut materials by lab stations or by class period. Of course, using lots of lab equipment means there is a lot of glassware, containers, and tools to be cleaned with brushes!
