it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hi! We are a Title I special ed - special day class that ranges from kindergarten to third grade. With up to four grade levels, students rotate by grade/ability groups in reading/phonics and math. We are lucky to have ST Math (Jiji) as well as other programs, yet our technology is over 10 years old and no good.
We are fortunate to be at one of the few IB public elementary schools in LAUSD.
Unfortunately when LAUSD did the computers for all students they only included a few schools, and we were not one of them. Our school has two computer labs, but we only get scheduled two half-hour sessions as a class. Our teacher and student computers are 7-15 years old. The student computers cannot run the online supplemental math program as well as the reading program that is coming from SPED.
Our lower grade special ed - special day class has four grade levels, with mostly Specific Learning Disabled & Autistic students. Having updated computers and tablets will allow my students to rotate through the math and reading individualized web-based programs when they are not in direct instruction, or in independent work groups. In addition, the technology has a high motivation factor for my SPED students to be on task and finish their classwork.
My Project
We will use the new laptops and tablets to rotate during learning group time. Our current student technology is over ten years old, and cannot handle newer Internet based differential/individual based programs that I have available to support my individual students' needs. The laptops will be mostly for writing and reading support and the tablets will run the Jiji math and other application-based learning.
As an IB School our PreK to 5th graders have many opportunities to present projects and ideas. The camcorder is to help us record and save their work and allow us to go from a paper based to electronic based portfolios.
The wireless presenter will allow the teacher to move about the room to help with on-task behavior, and monitor/meet individual student needs. We already have a document camera as well as an LCD projector, so teaching almost always has visual support for all learners to be successful and on-task.
My students need multi-sensory learning to gain a new skill, and support to fortify their learning.
Motivation is important as well. They want to use our current old IBM laptops but they don't work with our web-based Jiji math. They are too old and slow, and cannot be updated to current specs needed.
This grant and equipment will make a world of difference in that they will be able to rotate during classtime through the tech/programs that will support their individual disabilities/needs.
