Let's Debate by Weighing the Scales of Justice

Help me give my students a balance scale to weigh different arguments and debate.

My Project

My students love to debate and critique different arguments and opinions. In my class, we use a visible thinking strategy called Tug-of-War to analyze different arguments and make final decisions. At this time, we are focusing on activism in my 7th grade class. Additionally, we are taking a closer look at Emmett Till, women of the civil rights movement, and stereotyping. In my 8th grade class, we are looking at the recruitment of child soldiers. My students debate topics such as whether or not child soldiers should receive amnesty, what is the most effective type of activism, and the causes of individuals not receiving justice.

The balance scales that I'm requesting today will allow my students to visibly see which argument has the most "meat" or reasons and evidence to back it up.

It will also allow my students to remain objective when coming up with a decision on which argument is the most justifiable. The markers that I am requesting will allow my students to continue to engage in different arguments by writing on chart paper using our Tug-of-War strategy.

My goal is that my scholars will be able to analyze arguments proficiently and successfully debate. I hope that my students will learn more about justice in this unit and will take what they learn out into this world and help others.
